What is Bible Directory?
Bible Directory is a comprehensive database and filtering tool for Bible editions. We help you find the perfect Bible for your needs by providing:
- Detailed information on 90+ Bible editions across 9 major translations
- Advanced filtering by translation, type, price, features, and more
- Educational resources about translation philosophies and Bible types
- Links to trusted retailers where you can purchase Bibles
Important: We're NOT a store—we're an information resource that links to retailers.
Is Bible Directory affiliated with any publisher or denomination?
No. We are completely independent and unbiased. We're not affiliated with any Bible publisher, denomination, or retailer. While we participate in affiliate programs (see our Affiliate Disclosure), our recommendations are based on quality and user fit, not commissions. We respect all Christian traditions and theological perspectives.
How do you make money?
We earn affiliate commissions from Amazon and Christianbook when users click our links and make purchases. This costs you nothing extra—prices are the same whether you use our links or go directly to the retailer. These commissions help us maintain and improve this free resource. For complete transparency, see our Affiliate Disclosure.
Is Bible Directory free to use?
Yes! Bible Directory is completely free. There are no subscription fees, no premium tiers, and no hidden costs. Our mission is to help everyone find the right Bible, regardless of their budget. We're supported by affiliate commissions, which keep the service free for all users.

Can I buy Bibles directly from your site?
No. We're an information resource, not a retailer. We don't sell Bibles, process payments, or handle shipping. When you're ready to purchase, we provide links to trusted retailers (Amazon, Christianbook, etc.) where the actual transaction takes place. We may earn affiliate commissions from these links at no additional cost to you.
How are prices determined?
Prices shown are typically manufacturer's suggested retail prices (MSRP) or recent retailer prices. Actual prices may vary by retailer and may be lower due to sales or discounts. Always check the retailer's website for current pricing. We update prices regularly but cannot guarantee real-time accuracy across all retailers.
Bible Translations
Which translation should I choose?
It depends on your purpose and reading level. There's no single "best" translation—different Bibles serve different needs:
- For beginners or casual reading: NLT, NIV, CSB (clear, modern English)
- For in-depth study: ESV, NASB, NKJV (more literal translations)
- For academic work: NASB, ESV (formal equivalence translations)
- For memorization: NIV, ESV (memorable phrasing)
- For children: ICB, NLT (simple vocabulary)
For a detailed comparison, visit our Translation Philosophy Guide.
What's the difference between translations?
Translations differ primarily in their translation philosophy:
- Formal Equivalence (Word-for-Word): Translates as literally as possible from original languages. Examples: NASB, ESV, KJV. More accurate to original wording but sometimes harder to read.
- Dynamic Equivalence (Thought-for-Thought): Translates the meaning and ideas rather than exact words. Examples: NIV, NLT, CSB. More readable but involves more interpretation.
- Paraphrase: Rewrites the Bible in contemporary language and style. Example: The Message (MSG). Very readable but least literal.
They also differ in reading level, theological tradition, and target audience.
Why are there so many translations?
Multiple translations exist because different people have different needs. Some want word-for-word accuracy for serious study. Others want clear, modern English for everyday reading. Language also evolves over time, so newer translations use contemporary vocabulary. Additionally, ongoing scholarship and manuscript discoveries lead to updated translations. Having multiple translations available helps ensure everyone can access and understand God's Word in a way that works for them.
Are some translations more accurate than others?
All major modern translations are scholarly and reliable. "Accuracy" depends on what you mean: formal equivalence translations (NASB, ESV) are more accurate to original wording, while dynamic equivalence translations (NIV, NLT) are more accurate to original meaning in modern English. Both approaches are valid—choose based on your purpose and how you define "accuracy." Avoid fringe translations from unknown sources, but trust established translations from reputable publishers.
Should I use multiple translations?
Yes! Many Bible readers benefit from using multiple translations:
- A literal translation (ESV, NASB) for study
- A readable translation (NLT, NIV) for devotional reading
- Comparing translations helps you understand difficult passages
Just pick one as your "primary" translation for consistency.
Data & Updates
How many Bible editions do you have?
We currently track 90+ Bible editions across 9 major English translations from 11 publishers. Our database is growing regularly as we add new editions and publishers. Our goal is to reach 500+ editions covering the most popular and useful Bibles available to consumers.
How often is data updated?
We update our database regularly through:
- Automated scrapers: Run periodically to gather new data from retailers and publishers
- Manual validation: Quality checks to ensure accuracy
- User reports: Updates based on user-submitted corrections
- Publisher updates: New editions as they're released
Prices and availability may change more frequently than our updates, so always check the retailer's website for current information.
What if I find incorrect information?
Please contact us! We appreciate user reports of errors. Include the edition name, what's incorrect, and the correct information (with a source if possible). We verify all reports and update our database quickly. Your help improves the resource for everyone.
Why isn't my favorite Bible listed?
Our database is growing constantly! We prioritize widely available editions from major publishers, but we're always expanding. If your favorite Bible isn't listed, let us know with the title, publisher, and ISBN. We'll evaluate it for addition to our database.
Do you list out-of-print Bibles?
We focus on currently available editions that users can actually purchase. However, we may include recently out-of-print editions if they're still findable through used book markets or remaining stock. Very old or completely unavailable editions are generally not included.
Where does your data come from?
We gather Bible edition information from multiple trusted sources:
- Publisher websites (official specifications and descriptions)
- Retailer catalogs (Christianbook, Amazon, Zondervan)
- API.Bible integration (translation metadata)
- Publisher specifications (physical details and features)
- Manual validation (quality checks and accuracy verification)

Do you collect personal information?
We collect minimal information. We use cookies for analytics and affiliate tracking, but we don't sell or share your personal data. See our Privacy Policy for complete details on data collection and usage.
Affiliate & Revenue
Do affiliate links cost me more money?
No. Affiliate links cost you nothing extra. Prices are identical whether you use our affiliate links or go directly to the retailer's website. The retailer pays us a commission from their profit margin, not from your purchase price. You pay the same amount either way.
Do affiliate relationships influence your recommendations?
No. Our editorial content and Bible selection are completely independent of affiliate relationships. We include Bibles based on quality, availability, and usefulness—not commission rates. Many editions in our database have no affiliate links available. See our Affiliate Disclosure for our complete recommendation policy.
Am I required to use your affiliate links?
Absolutely not. You're free to search for Bibles directly on any retailer's website, visit physical stores, or purchase from any source you prefer. If you find our site helpful and choose to use our links, it helps support our work at no cost to you—but it's completely optional.
Which retailers do you partner with?
We currently participate in affiliate programs with:
- Amazon Associates: Earn 1-4% commission on qualifying purchases
- Christianbook Affiliate Program: Commissions on qualifying purchases
We may add additional retail partners in the future. All partnerships are disclosed in our Affiliate Disclosure.
